South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for greater responsibility from men in addressing violence against women, according to The Guardian. His appeal accompanied new measures amid public anger at authorities following recent killings of women.
The Guardian reports that Ramaphosa acknowledged shortcomings in efforts to protect women. He said police would review unresolved cases involving murder, attempted murder and serious sexual offences against women and children.
Police would also produce a funded plan to reduce the forensic backlog affecting those cases, the report says. Ramaphosa set a 60-day timeframe for both the reviews and preparation of the plan.
