Heavy rainfall could cause damaging flooding along Spain’s eastern coast over the coming days, according to The Guardian. The report identifies Valencia and Castelló de la Plana among the cities facing the greatest risk.
Forecast models cited by the newspaper indicate that rainfall could exceed 100mm across the region on Friday, with some locations potentially receiving 200–300mm. These figures are forecasts rather than recorded totals.
The Guardian attributes the threat to a weather pattern known as a Dana, which is most common in autumn. Cold air at higher altitudes moving over warm, moisture-rich Mediterranean surface air can generate intense thunderstorms that move slowly near the coast.
The newspaper reports that three towns in Catalonia have been placed under lockdown, while Valencia has closed schools serving nearly half a million children. It also notes that Valencia has suffered several damaging floods in recent years.
